Previous update (July 26, 2023) is here. All poetry is here.

Love after heartbreak

I used to wish
That you never knew heartbreak,
That your first love
Was your last love, only love.

That you would never know loss,
The happiness thief,
The missing, the longing,
The heavy weight of grief.

I used to wish that you only knew
Happily-ever-after,
The closeness, the joy,
That come with all the smiles and laughter.

But what I’ve learned with time is
As we mourn and learn to let go,
The gold that fills the cracks
Is also what helps our hearts grow.

So they can love again
With more strength and gentleness
Because they know what it’s like
To be a broken mess.

And if you find yourself in a long, lonely night,
Please remember, my friend,
The love we give
Finds a way to return in the end.
